Located in the centre of the promenade closest to the Guadalquivir River, the monument commemorates the journey in 1613 of the Japanese nobleman, Catholic Christian, and ambassador of the lord of the fief of Bojú, Date Masemune. The monument is a tribute to the samurai Hasekura Tsunenaga and his expedition to Spain, and is a reminder of the cultural and genealogical legacy that remains in the town..
The story of Hasekura Tsunenaga
In 1613, Hasekura Tsunenaga sailed from the Japanese port of Sendai on a galleon of Spanish design and technology for Spain. He was accompanied by a large retinue of Japanese samurai and merchants, and his mission was to establish political and commercial relations with the Spanish crown and to solicit its support for increasing Christianity in his country. On 5 October 1614, the Japanese embassy reached the shores of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, but by then things had already changed a lot in his native Cipango: the Christian religion was forbidden and outlawed in Japan.
Despite the importance of the expedition for their own national history, the Japanese did not know about it until 1989, when new research began on its origins and writings appeared mentioning the faithful samurai Hasekura Tsunenaga and his great work at the head of the "Keicho" expedition. From then on, the Japanese city and Coria del Río began a relationship that was formalised in 1991 with the twinning of the two towns, which was sealed with the installation of this statue of the samurai in the Carlos de Mesa Park, next to the Guadalquivir River.
