The aristocratic route: THE PALACE OF LAS DUEÑAS

Guided tour of the Palacio de las Dueñas.

We will travel back in time and discover the life of the Spanish aristocracy of the Golden Age by visiting the Palace of las Dueñas, located in the historic heart of Seville. This royal palace has been the residence of the Catholic Monarchs and their successors for over 500 years, and we will immerse ourselves in the luxurious and opulent world of Spanish aristocracy.

We begin our walking route in the center of Seville, crossing the narrow and lively streets of the city. We pass in front of historic monuments and churches, before heading to the Santa Cruz neighborhood, where the palace is located. The streets widen and we find ourselves facing the majestic façade of the Palace of las Dueñas.

The history of the palace dates back to the 15th century, when King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella I of Castile, the Catholic Monarchs, decided to build a palace for their daughter, Princess Isabella the Catholic. The palace was built in several stages, with different architectural styles, ranging from Gothic to Mudéjar.

Upon entering the palace, we are immediately struck by the beauty of its halls and gardens. The walls are adorned with frescoes and paintings, while the ceilings are decorated with sculptures and gold. The rooms are furnished with furniture and art objects from the era, creating a luxurious and opulent atmosphere.

We will discover the queen's apartments, with their precious wood furniture and beds, as well as the reception rooms, where kings received their guests. We will also visit the gardens, with their fountains and statues, which offer a peaceful refuge in the heart of the city.

At the end of "The Aristocracy Route", we will stop in the ballroom, where Spanish kings and queens have danced and reigned for centuries. We will let ourselves be carried away by the history and magic of this palace, which offers a glimpse into the life of the Spanish aristocracy of the Golden Age.

Architecture and history. The Casa de Alba, or Palacio de Dueñas, located in the neighborhood of La Feria and built between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, is the former residence of the Duchess of Alba. Its splendid architecture is influenced by Gothic-Mudejar and Renaissance styles. Its name comes from the neighboring Cistercian monastery that preceded it: the Monastery of Santa María de las Dueñas. It has strong links with famous names in Spanish history, such as the Casa Alba and the Pineda family.

    • Initial construction. The first buildings were constructed by Juan de Pineda and later expanded by his son Pedro de Pineda.
    • Literary heritage. A plaque on the façade reminds us that the great writer and poet Antonio Machado was born here in 1875 and spent the first years of his life here.

    AN IMPRESSIVE PALACE

The Palacio de Dueñas is made up of a series of buildings and courtyards, each more beautiful than the last. It is one of the Sevillian palaces that experienced the aesthetic transformations of Renaissance architecture, while preserving the Gothic-Mudejar and Plateresque styles typical of the region.

Architectural elements. The coat of arms of the Duchy of Alba can be seen on the main arch at the entrance of the palace. In the garden, which was once a riding arena, there are many orange and palm trees. The palace features numerous porticos, pilasters, columns, and arches. The main altar is decorated with tiles with metallic reflections typical of 16th-century Sevillian ceramics.
